in my search for meaningful music after ayşenur's death, i found myself listening to pat humphries' "swimming to the other side", an old family favorite. my phone's music player follwed that with the automatically-reccomended* "we shall be known" by mamuse, a new group to me. i understand this song to be popular in unitarian universalist circles, though, to my knowledge, it was not composed for the purpose. along with david rovics' "the death of rachel corrie" (covered later in the album), "we shall be known" ended up one of the key songs to which i found myself turning in the following months.
the local seattle community held a vigil on alki beach to mourn and celebrate the life of ayşenur. a friend of hers talked about a bonfire she had planned, one she wanted to hold on the seattle beach and invite all her friends. the tie-in to the lyrics of the song, which sing of being known by "the ones who circle round to tend these fires" sealed, in my head, the connection to this song.
i don't know i would say i covered this song for ayşenur. i'm not sure i could live up to such a task! i would say that this song, inadvertently, was already about ayşenur, and about so many other people. i just covered it.
